Roger Federer no jugará el Abierto de Australia

Tony Godsick, representante de Roger Federer, anunció que el suizo no estará en el primer Grand Slam de 2021. “Empezaremos a hablar esta semana que viene respecto a los torneos que empezarán en la segunda quincena de febrero”, expresó el estadounidense a la agencia AP.

Es oficial: Roger Federer no disputará el Abierto de Australia. El suizo decidió no participar del Grand Slam por la lesión en la rodilla. “Roger ha decidido no jugar el Abierto de Australia. Ha avanzado progresivamente en los últimos dos meses tanto con la rodilla como con su físico. Sin embargo, después de discutirlo con su equipo, ha decidido que lo mejor será regresar después del Abierto de Australia”, explicó Tony Godsick a la agencia Associated Press (AP).

Federer, de 39 años, campeón de veinte torneos del Grand Slam, fue sometido a principios de junio de este año a una operación en la rodilla derecha debido al retraso sufrido en el proceso de recuperación. “Empezaremos a hablar esta semana que viene respecto a los torneos que empezarán en la segunda quincena de febrero y después construiremos un calendario para el resto del año”, añadió el representante del tenista.

El último partido oficial disputado por el nacido en Basilea fue en las semifinales del certamen australiano 2020, en Melbourne Park, ante el serbio Novak Djokovic. El tenista romperá una racha de 21 ediciones seguidas disputando el primer major de la temporada después del debut con victoria en el cuadro final frente al estadounidense Michael Chang en el 2000. Es la segunda vez en su carrera que una lesión impide disputar un Grand Slam (2016, Abierto de Estados Unidos).
